WHITE CITY

White City: translation

London was known as the White City c. 1420. The name came from the almost universal use of lime-wash (a preservative) on the outside of buildings. The White Tower was aptly named. Indeed care for its exterior was such that gutters collecting rainwater were designed to ensure rain did not splash out of them, spoiling the whiteness of its great walls.
