INNSI GALL

Phrase employed by Irish chroniclers for the islands off the west coast of Scotland following the Vikings' attack on Iona in 795. Innsi Gall = islands of the foreigners. These were Norwegian Vikings, or Norsemen. To these Vikings, the Western Isles were known asSuthreyjar= the southern islands. -
