ZWEIFEL, ELIEZER TZEVI

(1815-88)
Russian Hebrew author and essayist. He was born in Mohilev, Belorussia. He wandered through Russia stopping in various towns, and worked as a preacher and teacher. In 1853 he was appointed lecturer in Mishnah and Talmud at the government rabbinical seminary in Zhitomir. Later he lived in Russia and Poland finally settled in Glukhov in the Ukraine. In hisShalom al-Yisrael, he defended Hasidism, and demonstrated the movement's kabbalistic roots.
