YOSE BEN HALAPHTA

Palestinian tanna. A pupil ofAkiva, he became the head of the academy in Sepphoris, and one of the leaders of the assemblies at Usha and Jabneh after the abolition of the Hadrianic decrees against the practice of Judaism. According to tradition, he was the author of the chronological workSeder Olam Rabbah. In the Talmud he is referred to as 'Rabbi Yose'.
