PHILIPPSON, MARTIN

(1846-1916)
German historian and communal leader, son ofLudwig Philippson. He was born at Magdeburg. He taught at the University of Bonn, and later at the University of Brussels, where he became rector. Owing to anti-German attitudes in Brussels, he was forced to resign and settled in Berlin, where he became involved in Jewish affairs and served as head of the Lehranstalt fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums. He published studies of modern history.
