PHILIPPSON, LUDWIG

(1811-89)
German rabbi and newspaper editor. He served as preacher to the Jewish community of Magdeburg and was instrumental in initiating Reform rabbinical synods in Germany. In 1837 he founded theAllgemeine Zeitung des Judentums, which he edited. He published a trans-lation of the Bible, and helped found the Institut zur Forderung der Israelitischen Literatur.
