American author. Born in Brooklyn, he grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. He studied at Brown University, and later lived in Greenwich Village where he drew cartoons for the weeklyJudge. From 1934 he contributed to theNew Yorker. His works includeDawn Ginsbergh's Revenge,Acres and Pains,Westward Ha!,Swiss Family Perelman,The Rising Gorge,Baby,It's Cold InsideandVinegar Pass. He wrote movie scripts and collaborated with the Marx Brothers forMonkey BusinessandHorsefeathers. His screenplay forAround the World in Eighty Dayswon an Academy Award.
