PAUKER, ANA

(1890-1960)

Romanian communist leader. Born Hannah Rabinsohn, she was the daughter of a kosher butcher. She taught Hebrew in a Bucharest Jewish primary school. Later she went to Paris where she married a communist, Marcel Pauker. She organized an underground communist cell and was eventually arrested. Following the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, she was exchanged for Romanian political detainees and welcomed by Stalin. After World War II, she became a communist leader in Romania. In 1947 she became minister of foreign affairs and first deputy prime minister.
