PACIFICO, DAVID

(1784-1854)
Anglo-Portuguese merchant and diplomat. Born in Gibraltar, he was a British subject. He served as Portuguese consul in Morocco (1835-7) and Greece (1837-42). In a riot against the Jewish community of Athens, he was attacked and his house was destroyed. When his claim for compensation was refused the British blockaded the port of Piraeus and captured 200 Greek ships. The Greek government then made financial reparations to Pacifico.
