MAGNUS, PHILIP

(1842-1933)
English Reform minister. He was born in London. He served as minister of the West London Synagogue of British Reform Jews from 1866 to 1880. He lectured in applied mathematics at University College, London, and in 1880 he became the organizing secretary and director of the City and Guilds of London Institute. From 1906 to 1922 he served as London University's member of parliament. He was knighted in 1886 and created a baronet in 1917. He played an important role in Anglo-Jewish affairs.
