LANGER, JIFI

(1894-1943)
Czech poet and author, the brother ofFrantisek Langer. After a visit to Palestine in 1913, he stayed for some time at the court of the Rokeah dynasty of Hasidic rabbis in Galicia. Returning to Prague, he led a religiously observant life, became a teacher at a Jewish school, and wrote Hebrew poetry. In various studies he applied Freudian theories to the appreciation of certain aspects of Jewish literature and ritual. His NineGatesis a volume of Hasidic tales.
