LAGUNA, DANIEL ISRAEL LOPEZ

(1653-1723)
Jamaican marrano poet. As a child he was taken to Peyrehorade in the south of France. Later he was arrested by the Inquisition in Spain. He settled in Jamaica, where he practised Judaism. In about 1720 he moved to London but he eventually returned to Jamaica. During his time in London he published a paraphrase of the Psalms in Spanish verse forms.
