GEBIRTIG, MORDECAI

(1877-1942)
Polish Yiddish poet. He was born in Krakow and worked as a carpenter. Regarded as a Yiddish bard, he composed the works and melodies for his songs, which were collected in 1936 in a volume edited byMenachem Kipnis. His most famous song,Our Town Is Burning, was written in 1938 under the impact of the pogrom in Przytyk.
