GASTER, MOSES

(1856-1939)
British rabbi and scholar. He was born in Bucharest and taught Romanian language and literature in the university there. Later he settled in England. He taught Slavonic literature at Oxford University. In 1887 he was appointed H aham of the English Sephardi community. From 1891 to 1896 he was principal of Judith Montefiore College in Ramsgate. He was active in Hibbat Zion and later in the Zionist movement. He published studies of Romanian literature, comparative and Jewish folklore, Samaritan history and liter-ature, rabbinic scholarship, liturgy, Anglo-Jewish history, and biblical studies.
