GARY, ROMAIN

(1914-80)
French novelist. Born in Vilna, he moved to Poland when he was seven, and in 1926 settled in Nice. He served in the French diplomatic service and was consul-general in Los Angeles from 1956 to 1960. HisA European Educationincludes elements of Jewish interest. InThe Dance of Genghis Cohn, he tells the story of a Jewish comedian shot by the Nazis who haunts his executioner. Jewish characters frequently appear in his novels.
