GALANTE, ABRAHAM

(1873-1961)
Turkish scholar. He was born in Bodrum. He was first a teacher and inspector in the Jewish and Turkish schools of Rhodes and Smyrna. Later he lived in Egypt, where he edited the Ladino newspaperLa vara. He encouraged the acculturation of Turkish Jewry to its homeland, and fought for Jewish rights. Eventually he returned to Istanbul where he became a professor at the university. He wrote studies of Jewish history in Turkey.
