ELBOGEN, ISMAR

(1874-1943)
American scholar. He was born in Schildberg, in the Posen district. He began teaching Jewish history and biblical exegesis at the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano in Florence in 1899. In 1903 he joined the faculty of the Hochschule fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin. In 1938 he emigrated to New York, where he was appointed research professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, and Dropsie College. He published studies in Jewish history and the history of the Jewish liturgy.
