FARHI, HAYYIM MU'ALLIM

(c. 1760-1820)
Palestinian statesman. He entered the service of Ahmad al-Jazzar Pasha in Damascus and was responsible for Palestine's treasury affairs. He participated in the city of Acre's stand against Napoleon in 1799. Later he was imprisoned, but was restored under Al-Jazzar's successor, Suleiman Pasha (ruled 1805-18). He acted as the protector of the Jews of Palestine.
