Spanish scholar. He studied underNahmanidesand was later the leader of Spanish Jewry. His legal decisions were viewed as authoritative because of his stature as a scholar; they constitute a primary source of information about the history of the Jews from the period. He defended Judaism from Christian and Muslim detractors and disputed the messianic claims ofAbraham ben Samuel Abulafia.
