Palestinian amora. He was the disciple ofJohanan, and also studied withSimeon ben LakishandEleazar ben Pedat. He lived in Caesarea when it was the Roman administrative centre. He was an important halakhic figure, and his aggadic sayings deal with theology, philosophy and ethics.
