ZAWIYETUMM ELRAKAN

The site of a Ramesside fortress built by Ramesses II on the Libyan border near Mersa Matruh as a defen sive measure against Libyan incursions. It contains a small templeto Ptah and Sakhmet, chapels to the deified king, and storage magazines. It was discovered and partially excavated by the British archaeologist Alan Rowe in 1946. It has been under excavation by a team of archaeologists from the University of Liverpool since 1994.
