UGARIT

Amajor town and seaport on the eastern Mediterranean coast in modern Syria, modern Ras Shamra. Relations with Egypt are attested beginning in the Middle Kingdom, and the city became part of the Egyptian empire during the New Kingdomuntil it switched its allegiance to the Hittites at the end of Dynasty 18. It was destroyed by the Sea Peoplesaround year 8 of Ramesses III. Excavations by a French expedition began in 1928 and have yielded much material, including inscribed tablets.
