Mendes: translation

Greek name for the Egyptian Per-Banebdjet, now Tell elRuba, capital of the 16th nome of Lower Egypt. Capital of Dynasty 29. The principal deity of the site was the sacred ram Banebdjet. Remains include tombs from the Old Kingdom and later eras and the cemetery of the sacred rams. The site has been excavated by a number of American Egyptologists since 1964. The nearby site of Tell elTimai, Greek Thmuis, marked the area of residence during the Graeco-Roman Period.
