MASTABA

Mastaba: translation

Arabic term used by Egyptologists to describe freestanding tombs from the late Predynastic Period onward. The superstructure of these tombs is rectangular in shape and composed of mudbrick or stone. Within the core of the superstructure are various storerooms or chapels, sometimes filled in to present a seemingly solid appearance. Ashaft within the body of the tomb leads to the underground burial chamber.
