MAAT

Maat: translation

The Egyptian concept of righteous order, often translated as truth and symbolized by a feather or a goddess with a feather on her head. The king was obliged to maintain maat on earth through just rule and the maintenance of the constant religious rituals in the temples, which placated the gods. Individuals were supposed to follow maat in their daily lives to ensure passage to the next life and, according to religious belief, their heart would be weighed against the feather of maat to determine their worthiness to enter the afterlife, although Books of the Dead were used to avoid any possible problems if there was doubt about the worthiness of the individual.
