GEBELEIN

Greek Pathyris. Modern name for a site in the third nome of Upper Egypt where remains from the Old Kingdom to the Roman Period have been uncovered, including an important early papyrus. The patron goddess was Hathor linked to Anubis. The site was excavated by an Italian expedition from 1910–1814, from 1919–1920, and again in 1930, 1935, and 1937.
