ICHIJO, KANEYOSHI (OR KANERA)

(1402-1481)
A court official and pre-eminent classical scholar of his time who instructed the influential poet and courtier Sanjonishi, Sanetaka in court ritual during the disturbed period of the Onin war. Around 1470 he wrote a treatise based on the symbolism of the three imperial regalia (see Sanshu no shinki) which sought to harmonise the principles of Buddhism, Confucianism and Shinto. Ichijo helped to maintain cultural continuity, at the same time encouraging Shinto syncretic innovations of the type developed inYuiitsu(Yoshida)shinto.
